Watermelon Z strain

Watermelon Z, also sold as Watermelon Zkittlez, is an indica-dominant hybrid that Leafly, Weedmaps and AllBud trace to a cross of The Original Z, the strain long sold as Zkittlez, and Watermelon.1,2,3,4 Weedmaps says the cross is widely attributed to Dying Breed Seeds and 3rd Gen Family in California, but SeedFinder lists Dying Breed’s own version with different parents.2,5 It tests at a median total THC of 18.60% across 63 state lab tests of Watermelon Z flower, with the middle half of results between 15.27% and 22.59%, a small sample.6 CBD is negligible: none of the 25 tests that reported CBD reached 1%.6

The Ferry Pilot stands full length and barefoot on a plank landing, facing the viewer, one gloved hand resting on top of a weathered wooden post with a small brass bell hanging from it. He has black hair and a pale beard under a frayed straw hat with a green band, and wears a red short-sleeved shirt, green trousers rolled at the ankle and yellow work gloves, with a coil of rope over one shoulder and a cord across his chest to a small pouch at his hip. Behind him are dark blue water and a pale blue sky, framed by a cream border.

Quick answers

Is Watermelon Z indica or sativa?

Indica-dominant, by most accounts. Leafly labels it indica and describes an indica-dominant hybrid, Weedmaps also says indica-dominant, AllBud lists 70% indica and Barney’s Farm’s seed version 55%.1,2,3,8 The exceptions are seed lines: SeedFinder describes Dying Breed Seeds’ version as mostly sativa and Purple City Genetics’ as sativa-dominant, and Pyramid Seeds lists 50/50.5,7,9

What strain is Watermelon Z?

A fruity hybrid usually traced to The Original Z, the 2016 Emerald Cup winner long sold as Zkittlez, crossed with an indica called Watermelon.1,2,3,4 Leafly, Weedmaps and AllBud give that cross, and Leafly lists Watermelon, also called Watermelon Kush or Watermelon OG, as an indica with unknown parents.1,2,3,10

How strong is Watermelon Z?

Our measurements come from a small sample: the median total THC across 63 state lab tests was 18.60%, and 19.0% reached 25% or more.6 Strain databases list more: 24% on Leafly, 25% on AllBud and 21–28% on Weedmaps.1,2,3

What does Watermelon Z taste like?

Sweet and fruity. Leafly users list tropical, tree fruit and sweet; on Weedmaps, 44% of flavor reports say sweet, 34% tropical and 22% earthy; AllBud describes sweet citrus and watermelon with a sour edge.1,2,3

Who bred Watermelon Z?

Accounts differ. Weedmaps says the Zkittlez × Watermelon cross is widely attributed to Dying Breed Seeds and 3rd Gen Family; SeedFinder describes Dying Breed Seeds as a Mendocino, California, company led by Shiloh Massive and the 3rd Gen Family, but lists its Watermelon Zkittlez as Watermelon Zum Zum #3 × OG Eddy.2,5,11 SeedFinder lists nine breeders’ versions in all, including Barney’s Farm, Pyramid Seeds and Purple City Genetics.12

Is Watermelon Z the same as Watermelon Zkittlez?

Usually, yes. Leafly’s Watermelon Zkittlez page carries the name Watermelon Z and refers to the longer name only as an infringing candy name, and Weedmaps lists Watermelon Z as another name for Watermelon Zkittlez.1,2 Weedmaps adds that a separate Purple City Genetics version, sometimes also called Watermelon Z, descends from different parents.2

Watermelon Z does not appear in the sales rankings we checked: Leafly’s best-selling strains of 2025, Cannabis Business Times’ California top-10 flower lists for 2024 and 2025, and The Marijuana Herald’s September 2026 list of top sellers in 23 states.13,14,15,16 Its Leafly page has 224 ratings and its AllBud page 19 reviews.1,3

Its parent is the famous one: Zkittlez took first-place indica honors at the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cups in Michigan and San Francisco and won the 2016 Emerald Cup.4,20 Leafly has pages for several strains bred from Watermelon Z, including Watermelon Gelato, Watermelon Runtz and Watermelon Mimosa.21,22,23
