Is Watermelon Z indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Watermelon Z is usually described as an indica-dominant hybrid of The Original Z, the strain long sold as Zkittlez, and Watermelon, an indica of unknown parentage.1,2,3,4 Not every account agrees: SeedFinder lists Dying Breed Seeds’ Watermelon Zkittlez as a mostly sativa cross of Watermelon Zum Zum #3 and OG Eddy, and Weedmaps notes a Purple City Genetics version with different parents.2,5

The two parents

The Original Z is Leafly’s name for Zkittlez, an indica hybrid bred from an alleged mix of Grape Ape and Grapefruit crossed with an undisclosed strain.3 Leafly traces it to a grower dubbed Gas Station Bob and says the Terp Hogz growers Fields and Tony Mendo popularized it in the 2010s with 3rd Gen Family’s Brandon Parker.3 Weedmaps gives Grape Ape × Grapefruit with a possible undisclosed third parent.13

Watermelon, also known as Watermelon Kush and Watermelon OG, is an indica from two unknown parents whose fruity watermelon flavor Leafly likens to grape with hashy undertones; Leafly lists Watermelon Zkittlez among its children.4 Big Head Seeds names the Watermelon in its version as East Coast Watermelon, or Watermelon Kush.14

Which cross? The accounts

Every account puts Zkittlez in the family, but not at the same distance.1,5,15 In the first it is a parent; in the second it is probably a grandparent, through a Dying Breed strain called Watermelon Zum Zum.1,2,5,15

SeedFinder lists Watermelon Zum Zum, also from Dying Breed Seeds, as probably The Original Z × Adonai.15

How indica is it?

It depends on whose Watermelon Zkittlez. The databases and the Zkittlez × Watermelon seed lines lean indica: Leafly labels it indica and calls it an indica-dominant hybrid, Weedmaps says indica-dominant, AllBud lists 70% indica, Barney’s Farm 55% and its autoflower 60%.1,2,6,12,17 The Watermelon Zum Zum lines lean the other way: SeedFinder describes Dying Breed’s version as mostly sativa and Purple City Genetics’ as a sativa-dominant hybrid, and Pyramid Seeds lists 50/50.5,11,19 STIIIZY’s product page calls Watermelon Z an indica.16

Seed versions and clones

Seeds sold under the name are not one line. SeedFinder lists nine breeders’ versions of Watermelon Zkittlez, among them Barney’s Farm, Big Head Seeds, Dying Breed Seeds, Purple City Genetics and Pyramid Seeds.20 It lists Dying Breed’s version as regular seeds only; Purple City Genetics, an Oakland nursery that Leafly calls a cloning powerhouse, made a feminized S1 from an elite clone it selected; and Barney’s Farm added an autoflower bred with its BF Super Auto #1.5,11,12,21,22

What our lab data adds

In state lab records the long name dominates: 62 of the 63 flower tests in our sample use a Zkittlez or Skittles spelling, and one says Watermelon Z.23 The name is also used well beyond plain flower. Our strict matching excluded 232 results across all product types (74 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by "Sour Watermelon Zkittlez" (48 results).23 Results that match the name exactly but are not flower are counted separately: 71 concentrates, 19 shake or trim results, 15 edibles or topicals, 12 infused pre-rolls, 5 pre-rolls and 4 infused-flower results.23

Leafly lists Watermelon Gelato and Watermelon Runtz as Watermelon Z’s children, and Weedmaps says Watermelon Mimosa has gone on to parent Smartiez, Orange OG and Post Melone.1,24 Gelato 45, Candyland and Mimosa each have their own guide in the Official Cannabis network (gelato45.com, candylandstrain.com, mimosastrain.com).
